Graduation
The most important moment for any school is the time when their students can walk across the stage, receive a diploma, transfer the tassel from one side of their mortarboard to the other, and begin their first day as high school graduates.
For Street Academy / Harriet Gibbons High School, graduation ceremonies take on a stronger meaning. To graduate at this point meant that you have not only fulfilled the obligations and received a New York State high school diploma, you have, in turn, proved to everyone you know, everyone who gave up on you, everyone who thought you had no chance, that yes you could graduate from high school, yes you can go to college or the military or the business world, and yes you achieved your goals.
One of the enduring traditions at Street Academy / Harriet Gibbons High School was the "passing of the torch," in which graudating seniors hand a lighted candle to the seniors of next year's enrollment class, to keep the flame alive and to keep the dream alive.
For many years, graduation ceremonies were held at Doane Stuart School, a fitting location in that Street Academy was originally founded by the novitat that was originally based on the convent grounds of Doane Stuart School. In the Harriet Gibbons years, the graduation ceremonies were held on the campus of St. Rose College in Albany's Pine Hills neighborhood.
