CHUCK MILLER WINS GOLD AT 2008 IAMA AWARDS

It is now official. On June 24, 2008, I received a gold award from the International Automotive Media Awards for my Toy Collector Magazine article on the history of the Speed Racer cartoon series. The award was given to me at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit, and is my second IAMA Foundation Award; in 2004 I received a Silver medal for my "Convoy Rides Again" article for RoadKing magazine.

More information at this link!

My sincere thanks to the members of the International Automotive Media Awards and the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, as well as to the staff and management of Toy Collector Magazine. I am deeply moved and honored to receive this award.

PLEASE HELP CHUCK BUY A NEW CAMERA

First off, don't get me wrong. I love my Nikon D70, I've loved it for the past three years. However, I missed the shot of the year a while back because the D70 wasn't fast enough to capture it. I had originally drooled over a Nikon D3, but as of recent reports, there may be a new camera coming out that has the features of the D3 - WITHOUT the D3's price tag. This camera, with the purported designation of Nikon D700, WILL capture those action shots I've previously missed.

Within that, I'm trying to save enough cash to acquire a Nikon D700, either new or used. I'm not expecting anybody out there to plunk down the entire amount to help me get the camera, but if people are willing to contribute a few dollars here and there, it would be appreciated beyond belief. If you've read one of my articles at chuckthewriter.com, or have enjoyed my photographs, and would like to show any sort of appreciation, please click on one of the buttons below and help to donate to a worthy cause.

BETTY MILLER, 1912 (or 1911) - 2008

Betty Miller was a wonderful person who lived to the ripe age of 96 (and still possessed a valid Massachusetts driver's license). She was the one person I could count on as I grew from childhood to adulthood, and I am still deeply saddened by her passing on March 25, 2008. She was born in 1912 - or 1911, the records at that time aren't completely clear - and packed a tremendous amount of life into 96 years. Please read my blog about her at this link.

CBA MUSEUM RESEARCH PROJECT A SUCCESS

After two years of hard research, I can now say that I have recovered the first twelve seasons of the Continental Basketball Association, from 1946 to 1958 - player and team statistics that were previously lost. Here's the press release from the Continental Basketball Association. For more information on the CBA's history, come visit the CBA Museum!

CHUCK'S MYSPACE PAGE UP AND RUNNING

I finally decided that in order to get more networking contacts, it was time to start up a MySpace page. It's definitely going to take some work updating this (like I don't have enough projects on my plate as it is?), click here to see the MySpace page! And by the way, who's that creepy "Tom" guy who became my friend the minute I set up the account? Yikes...

CHUCK'S "3-D" PHOTO GALLERY ON LINE NOW

I recently purchased a Loreo 3-D beamsplitter camera lens for my Nikon, and from time to time I have experimented with 3-dimensional photography. If you want to see what types of 3-D snaps I have taken of late, visit my gallery here.

CHUCK-PENNED LINER NOTES FOR MUSIC CD'S

Keep on the lookout for the brand new CD by the reunited NYC garage-rock band Continental Crawler. This group, with members who were part of the Misfits, has reunited after more than 25 years apart, and are releasing an anthology compilation later this summer. And yes, I was pleased to be able to interview the four members of Continental Crawler and pen some liner notes for the band's upcoming CD, "Cars, Cards and Questionable Women." If you want professional liner notes for your band's upcoming CD or greatest hits package, contact me about taking on this project for you!

CBA MUSEUM NOW ON LINE

My latest project, an evolving webpage chronicling the 60-year history of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), and its earlier incarnations as the Eastern Basketball Association and Eastern Professional Basketball League, is now up and running. Please visit CBA Museum.com, a treasure trove of collectible programs, pocket schedules, trading cards, team histories, anecdotes, oral histories, and much much more!
